Kilimanjaro Association of Tour Operators was formerly, in 2002, registered with BRELA. But presently sinceyear 2014, has been re-registered with Ministry of Home Affairs under the SocietiesAct (Cap. 337 R.E. 2002).

KIATO is an association of Local Tour Agents in conformity with  Clause 58 of the Tourism Act, 2008; and in pursuance with the National Parks Mountains Regulations, 2003 Clause 3 which stipulates that:  "The Park shall deal only with registered and licenced tour operator who is also member of an association"

KIATO works to educate and lead members tour companies to adhere to regulations and guidelines and consequently meet international IMEC standards hence get registered and linked to its website in order to be accorded recognition by reputable foreign tour agents worldwide.

Adherence to these policies is important to KIATO. If you witness any violation of these policies, please let us know as soon as possible.

By hiring a KIATO member company for your mountain climb, you are assured that they adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Proper treatment of porters and other crew
  • Proper pay for porters and other crew in compliance with agreement between the concerned parties.
  • The tour company will see that porters are properly clothed.
  • The tour company will give proper meals, two or thee meals per day.
  • The tour company will make sure porters carry not more than 25kgs in total (clients' and porter's personal gear cumulative).
  • The tour company will enter into contract with porters hired /engaged and should be paid shortly after return from the trip and not to be hired and paid through guide(s).
  • The tour company will make sure that tips are paid by clients directly to all crew instead of giving it to office or guide(s) to distribute to the crew.
  • The tour company will provide porters with transport, shelter, medication and accord park entry fees.

Membership is Open to all local tourist agents in the Northern Zone. KIATO thus welcomes tour operators / agents and companies which have been registered by Business Licensing Authority (BRELA) of the Ministry Of Industries and Trade. Members should also have TALA license (The tourists agents licensing ) Act 1969 which is issued by the same ministry. Currently 36 members are registered with KIATO of which all appear on the members page.

Benefits of Being a KIATO Member

  • It is a law of the Country, the Park to deal only with a properly registered and licensed tour operator who is a member of an Association. KIATO is at their disposal.
  • Becoming a KIATO member opens an arena to channel tour operator's views and acquire a common voice on issues both individual and common; to be represented elsewhrere as to KINAPA, TANAPA, MNRT give or be given advice; to have other bodies including government to reach tour operators destining tourists to Mt Kilimanjaro through KIATO.

  • Potential for future international trade show exposure through KIATO.

Membership Fees

  • Membership Entry fee - Tsh. 200, 000/-
  • Annual membership fee - Tsh. 450, 000/-
  • A Membership Certificate is issued to members annually.

Promoting and leading tour operators dealing with Mountain climbing and wildlife safaris for responsible tourism and to meeting acceptable international standards.
